    The built environment as part of a smart networked world creates many new opportunities and business models, the engagement with industry and wider built environment stakeholders will be essential in the creation of new technical solutions, new behaviours and new smarter ways of constructing and manufacturing.

    Despite expectations, the uptake of virtual and augmented reality has been less than expected across many sectors. However, the construction industry seems to be breaking this trend, with increased adoption of VR and AR during the design, construction and operations phases. Andrew’s session explores why the use of VR is proving so popular within the built environment and the benefits it offers the design team, clients and end users. He will also discuss future developments in this area such as linking VR to the Internet of Things and showcase a live VR demonstration with our colleagues in the Netherlands.

    This session will explore the potential for Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) solutions to revolutionise the way design and build and meet the targets set out in the Government's Construction Strategy.
    DfMA is an approach that focuses on ease of manufacture and efficiency of assembly. It's a well established process used in the automotive and consumer-product industries where the efficient production of large numbers of high-quality products is essential. In the case of the automotive industry for example many of the components used to build a car are standardised across an entire range.

    The perceived lack of 'repeatability' in the built environment does create challenges but the potential for standardised components in design and construction is huge.

    101 Rules of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a guide to communicate the principles and issues of BIM based on research of the wide range of information available. The aim is to support greater understanding of BIM simply and how this can improve productivity, develop industry awareness and skills, and lead to the creation of high performance, high quality assets for clients and users.

    At the core of BIM is collaboration. To enable collaborative ways of working, everyone needs to be working from a consistent set of standards.

    Since 2006, BSI as the national standards body has been supporting Government and industry to achieve Level 2 BIM, the staging post selected for the Government BIM mandate. BSI has developed the standards that play a vital role in supporting the Level 2 BIM mandate, setting out the requirements and establishing the framework for collaborative working. The development of forthcoming standards such as PAS 1192-6/7 will enrich the BIM Level 2 suite of documents providing support to health and safety professionals and construction products/systems manufacturers.

    This session will set out the practical steps needed to deliver the objectives of the UK BIM initiative consistently and effectively. Exploring the component parts of BIM level 2, explaining the processes, tools and their impact on operational management and capital delivery of assets. We’ll also look at how best to embed BIM Level 2 into project and programme briefings and clarifies classification and management of data during procurement.

  • 10.45Poultry Market London - Why walk when you can Fly? 

    Constructed in 1953, the Poultry Market is a Grade II-listed building in the heart of London that forms part of Smithfield Market. Designed by Arup, its iconic roof is claimed to be the largest concrete shell structure ever built and is remarkable for its span in relation to the shallow dome.

    With the building in a state of disrepair, a renovation programme was required to replace a number of services and refurbish various MEP and structural elements, including the 225ft roof. The building owners – the City of London Corporation – instructed Arup to scope out the programme, with Plowman Craven contracted to laser scan and model the building and its surroundings, as well as providing condition and MEP surveys.

    As a project, the biggest challenge was understanding the physical state of the building. Without accurate data, Arup would potentially have been at risk when advising City of London Corporation. From a survey perspective, the immediate challenges where those relating to access, safety of operatives and time. How could PCL access, record and model the building accurately within a very short time-frame?. It quickly became obvious that traditional survey methods alone would not address the problems so innovation had to be the way forward.

    Today’s infrastructure construction sets a contractor a variety of requirements and characteristics to be met, one being the need to prove the best possible competence to the project owner. This presentation provides an overview to the Finnish national code of practices and project owner guidelines set for BIM-based infra construction and opens up processes and digital solutions deployed at YIT in order to increase quality of project management and delivery.   • 12.15Integration of Point Cloud into Large Complex Airport Project 

    Refurbishment projects are most challenging when most of the as-built 2D information are missing or outdated and you are trying to verify and capture all the existing conditions and details to design and coordinate the new work. Production of coordinated design with minimum field conflicts within a short timeframe is close to impossible and time consuming on airport baggage hall refurbishment project if all the works were done via traditional hand sketches and surveys. Therefore, point cloud scanning is carried out and it becomes a vital part of the project delivery process.

    The class will provide an insight of how point cloud data is used and implemented in the delivery of complex baggage replacement project in Heathrow Terminal 1, 2 and 4. This session is aimed for anyone who wants to find out what point cloud is and its benefits and also construction professionals who are eager to learn more about how point cloud survey can be incorporated into the design and construction processes. The class will provide the best practices and workflows of managing and manipulating large laser scan data featuring the use of tools such as Navisworks, Revit, Recap, Point Tools etc. There will also be opportunities to learn about the values of using point cloud including the lessons learnt and the limitations we faced on the project.

    Attendees will also learn how to define a fit for purpose and accurate scope for laser scan surveys to enable useful information to be digitised in the Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment.

    This session will explore the links between BIM and Smart Cities. The use of BIM at the asset management phase provides even further opportunity, particularly where combined with the use of IoT sensors and actuators to more effectively manage the operation of assets.     Last year Bentley Systems and Topcon formed a partnership to provide construction workflows through cloud integration not previously possible.  The partnership is designed to increase efficiency and productivity with enhanced integration through a suite of cloud services and is one of the first of it's kind.

    To date, surveying, engineering, and construction industries have separately advanced to 3D technologies. But until now, 3D models have been recreated—rather than reused—at each phase.  The integration of these technologies means that we can create a continuous representation of reality throughout the build process.  This session will explore the practical implementation of these technologies against the backdrop of recent case study.

  • 15.30Hacking the smart city - how secure is BIM? 

    In 2015, the UK Government released PAS 1192-5 for security-minded projects and there's a suite of PAS documents relating to Smart Cities and security.

    Paul will deconstruct the lessons so far to look at how smart cities, infosec and cybersecurity collide, and how teams can secure their data when working on BIM projects and operating built assets.

    Paul will help attendees to understand detailed advice about cybersecurity and digital environments, making reference to common workflows in specification, modelling, cloud tools and document management systems.

  • 11.45The Microsoft HoloLens: Practical experience with clients and use 

    The Microsoft HoloLens brings a new way for users to interact and understand with 3D models overlaid onto the real world, whilst still having view of the environment around them. Hands free operation with a see-through visor enables use of the HoloLens on site without the dangers associated with other mobile devices, that can distract a user from their surroundings, such as a tablet or phone.

    This session will demonstrate some of the benefits that the HoloLens has brought to live Fulcro Group projects, including; more effective real-time communication between site and design office, access to live model data on site, geo-location of 3D models on site (overlaying the real world), using Spatial Mapping to align geometry on site, and remote expert access to site for consultancy. This talk will also demonstrate how adoption of Applied Technologies into projects can bring real business benefits.

    As one of the first companies in the UK to develop and deploy the HoloLens technology on site, Fulcro Applied Technologies are working hard to create simple platforms and apps that can be used by all for visualisation of complex engineering detail models both in the office and out on site. Recent collaboration with Microsoft Research has pushed forward the use of Holographic technology in the AEC sector.

  • 12.15VR in M&E and acoustics design process 

    We will share our experience developing interactive Virtual Reality (VR) environments for clients and design teams. The aim of using VR is to provide a presentation method that encapsulates both visual and acoustic aspects of the options that a project team faces while designing a building.

    A case study will be presented that will take the audience through the design work of a swimming pool refurbishment located on one of London’s listed buildings, where Max Fordham LLP is providing both M&E and acoustic design. By using VR we will be able to show the combined acoustic and lighting implications of the various options, while at the same time providing the client with an overview of the daylight and artificial lighting scheme proposed for the building.

    An overview of the hardware/software technologies being used or that could be used with a similar effect will also be presented. In particular, the use of headphones and loudspeakers (MaxFordham’s 3D Ambisonics loudspeakers setup) as an audio reproduction format will be discussed.

    We will also report on the design team’s feedback regarding the usefulness of the VR apps and their impact on the design process.

    As part of the session, we will make a short presentation of interactive examples of our work in VR: VR models of a plant room and of a classroom, as well as the swimming pool model, on which the case study is based. We will outline the content of those models, the functionality of the apps and discuss ways in which the apps could be modified or improved.

    The presentation will be most suitable for architects, project managers and developers who are looking at utilising VR presentations within their projects. We believe that they can be useful for anyone interested in VR as a tool in the design process within construction industry.

    The World’s busiest international airport, having invested £11 billion in the last 15 years and about to embark on a £16 billion Heathrow Expansion project, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK.

    Heathrow wants to drive significant improvement in the on-site productivity of its contractors. It is interested in using immersive technology to drive and support overall productivity improvement by ensuring compatibility and facilitating constructability of the “kit of parts” to form completed buildings and, as far as possible, all elements of the overall Expansion Project. This might include design stages, manufacturing processes, logistics processes, sequencing, connections and ultimately operational function.

    The CH2M Challenge: Engaging stakeholders through immersive technologies

    CH2M wants to be able to undertake stakeholder engagement sessions using immersive technologies. It is interested in how this can provide stakeholders with an improved sense of what impacts would occur and what it would feel like when the project is being constructed and completed.

    CH2M is keen to explore how to be able to design in the immersive environment, to be able to alter designs with stakeholders, collecting real time feedback in a semi/fully automated way. This should result in more productive and efficient consultations accelerating the design process and ensuring better buy in / inputs from stakeholders. The ability to record all interactions and preferably undertake actions from design inputs such as voice commands would be an advantage. Should a solution be able to provide the level of interoperability required, it is conceivable that CH2M would invest in it and encourage its clients to do the same.

    The Kier Group Challenge: Rehearsing using immersive technologies

    Kier want to be able to undertake induction courses and provide training to site personnel in a standardised and safe way across their many sites.

    Kier are interested in how VR/AR/MR can be used to undertake industry wide training (to a common standard) and induction to be carried out before arriving on site. This could include simulation and virtual rehearsal before carrying out a task, and might include simulation of issues or unplanned events. This might take the form of virtual training at multiple locations similar to that used by surgeons receiving training using VR

This suite of tools allows us to react to client changes more efficiently and have a complete control of our database tracking optimisation of structural performance and cost. This session will explore a series of examples where this new approach was experimented, tested and improved, highlighting the benefits and differences with the traditional approach. It will also look into the future, to foresee the consequences that a new way of designing building will bring to the construction industry and its players.

  • 13.30The Digital Construction Site 4.0 

    The ViCon session will outline how to effectively structure, capture and integrate on-site data into a live and useful BIM model during the construction and handover phase of a project. The talk will cover the essential requirements of a robust Project Breakdown Structure (PBS) passing on best practice experiences on PBS development for both building and infrastructure projects. The power of a well-tuned PBS as the “glue” to combining all kinds of project data is underlined and demon-strated with live examples of how things work - and how they don’t.

    Building up on this data structure, we will reach out to onsite-processes such as daily work, inspection and incident reporting and highlight how these activities are successfully digitalized to streamline work on a day-to-day basis. Site personnel use digital mobile forms on tablets and smartphones to capture and transmit data - including photos - to a central project data integration platform. This platform turns data into valuable and useable information providing live access for all registered project stakeholders.

    The presentation will show how easily data is found, analyzed and prepared enhancing business processes such as procurement, progress monitoring and invoicing. Based on these samples we will also compare the cost between paper-based and digital way of working. The savings are reportedly substantial.

    Depending on the given timeframe and location a practical, hands on session could be prepared, giving the audience the chance to experience how efficient it is to collect trusted data even within the given environment of the seminar theatre.

    In September 2017, The Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) launched “The Innovation Factory”, a 35,000sq ft prototyping & training facility near Glasgow, giving the UK construction industry open access to over £2M of state-of-the-art digital manufacturing equipment.

    With technology and expertise readily available to support collaboration projects that enable industry to “make” innovation (as opposed to just “talk” innovation), the Innovation Factory equipment ranges from AR/VR technology to an offsite manufacturing cell, a 13m vacuum press for Cross Laminated Timber production to large scale multi-material 3D printing capacity, and industrial robotics to specialist composite masonry and non-woven fibre machinery capable of batch manufacturing a range of high recycled content products.

  • 11.45Why does geospatial accuracy matter in a BIM Environment? The Problem with Data Interoperability  

    Accuracy is considered one of the fundamental issues in peoples use and confidence in geospatial data and information systems. Using traditional methods, the geospatial community knows how to determine accuracy, but how can this be translated into a digital environment?

    On detailed examination, we find different interpretations for “accuracy” coming from different people even within the same industry. The impact of misunderstood “accurate” or “inaccurate” data can have serious repercussions on project success for the client and all involved at any stage.

    We examine:
    - The geospatial meaning of accuracy
    - How it is determined
    - How it can be used to control a project
    - How can we make this visible to BIM users

    Data Interoperability is a global and national issue that affects everybody involved in the built environment. Specifically, the issue concerns geospatial geometry and its co-ordination in space. How do we knowledgeably and safely transfer data between users, platforms and reference frames and keep its original integrity?

    This is enhanced in the digital BIM age by the abundance of digital data formats and software translators which ease the exporting and merging of data without general industry understanding of the process and the risk.

  • 13.15How Cloud Computing tackles the challenge of 'Collaborative Creation'

    Today, more than ever, AEC companies are bound to collaborate to deliver construction projects within the limits of the specifications and requirements, within the preset and engaged budgets and timings, to stay competitive. With BIM coming into play, this major trend that I like to call ‘collaborative creation’ has been accelerated in the past few years, especially in the UK with the BIM level2 compliance legislations on all public assets. Collaborative creation is about bringing all AEC parties together around one project, that are involved during the project’s lifecycle from design to maintenance. Collaborative creation is therefore closely related to BIM and its challenges, to collaborate with different companies involved. We’ll show why adopting and embracing this change is important to stay competitive in the industry.

    This is the point where we’ll show successful cases and less efficient projects in function of the ability to embrace, face and cope with this trend. As an example, the Burj Khalifa involved 78 companies of which the majority had to work closely together to make this project work. Now we’ll start teasing with the ‘promised land’, the ‘perfect world’ or the ‘ideal solution’. This is where it gets interactive by asking input from our audience. What missing features do they need to cope with this major trend of collaborative creation? What’s the experience of the audience? The next topic is where cloud computing comes into play.

    We’ll introduce features of cloud computing as ‘magic gifts’ to get to the ‘promised land’. We’ll show in real time how an environment is set up, to create and enable the infrastructure to collaborate with multiple parties in a BIM project. We’ll discuss previous cases and experiences to prove and showcase that cloud computing can be a game changer to eliminate any IT technical issues, related to collaborative creation. As a short wrap-up, cloud computing gives CAD-users, engineers, designers, architects, contractors all flexibility to edit and navigate through models at anytime, anywhere and with any device, with the ability to scale up their IT infrastructure and devices in terms of performance and amount of workstations throughout the evolution of the project’s needs. Cloud computing also increases security by having all files centrally stored, without the need to download models to work on them with big and slow data streams as a result, while offering full security. We’ll finish up with testimonials from our clients, and how they’ve been able to cope with the need for ‘collaborative creation’ with cloud computing. We’ll show how we could help them achieve their goal in their journey to collaborative creation.

    The application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the historic environment presents many benefits to the understanding and preservation of structures. The BIM4Heritage is a special interest group established within the BIM4Communities to champion Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the Historic Environment. The group is formed by various specialists, including those from within the AEC industry, Conservation, Heritage Organisations Academic Departments and end-users. The vision of the BIM4Heritage Group is to provide a forum for organisations and industry professionals to share knowledge and lessons learnt on BIM applied to historic structures. This presentation looks at what the group has been working since its formation and aims to promote the learning, awareness and understanding of BIM within the conservation and heritage sector of the built environment.

    A case study of Stride Treglown's BIM Level 2 delivery of Bristol Business School at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). In particular, the realities of delivering useful asset data for post occupancy facilities management systems. Our client, Mike Ford (BIM Manager at UWE) will provide his personal experiences with BIM and the benefits it provides going forward. We will look in detail at the COBie delivery and the software platforms used, including the challenges faced when dealing with custom attributes provided by the client. Furthermore, we will discuss the CAFM platform and how this data will be managed on a day to day basis to prove the life cycle costing benefits from BIM.
