The Government Construction Strategy was published by the Cabinet office on 31 May 2011. The report announced the Governments intention to require: collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) on its projects by 2016.

Essentially the UK Government has embarked with industry on a four year programme for sector modernisation with the key objective of: reducing capital cost and the carbon burden from the construction and operation of the built environment by 20%. Central to these ambitions is the adoption of information rich Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies, process and collaborative behaviours that will unlock new more efficient ways of working at all stages of the project life-cycle.

As we embark upon this journey it is vital that we can raise awareness of the BIM programme and requirements and ensure that a consistent message is delivered to the supply chain, share best practice and allow a feedback route back to the Task Group.

Level 3 Building Information Modelling – Strategic Plan

This strategy represents the outcomes and recommendations for the next stage of the Building Information Modelling journey, building on the standards and savings being delivered by the BIM level 2 initiative. Level 3 will enable the interconnected digital design of different elements in a built environment and will extend BIM into the operation of assets over their lifetime. It will support the accelerated delivery of smart cities, services and grids.

Our responsibilities are to:

- Provide new support for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with high-growth potential
- Make sure that government initiatives such as SBRI (Small Business Research Initiative) attract innovative UK businesses and give companies access to important customers in the public sector
- Identify and invest in the sectors that have the greatest potential for innovation to speed up economic growth
- Help innovative companies work with their backers so their ideas can be developed commercially

The next phase of the UK’s Internationally-recognised Building Information Modeling Task Group programme will be announced today at the Institution of Civil Engineers BIM 2016 conference by Mark Bew MBE, chair of the BIM Task Group and the newly formed Digital Built Britain programme.

Innovate UK and the Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy have formed a partnership to deliver through Digital Built Britain, the next phase of digitisation in the construction sector.

Digital Built Britain, first announced in the 2016 budget, will deliver reductions in whole-life costs and carbon emissions, whilst improving productivity and capacity by using intelligent building information models, sensing technology and secure data and information infrastructure. Digital Built Britain will also continue the work of the globally recognised BIMTask Group programme, set up in 2011 to deliver up to 20% savings on costs of major projects.
